Mr. Boyd Scarbrough, age 97, of Zebulon, formerly of Memphis, Tenn., passed away Dec. 7, 2013, at his home.
He was born June 1, 1916 into a farming family in Bellefontaine, Miss., son of the late Albert Lee Scarbrough and Bertha Lane Scarbrough. He worked as Labor Relations Manager for the Firestone Company in Memphis, Tenn., for 39 years before retiring in 1976. At the time of his death, he was the oldest living charter member of the Scenic Hills United Methodist Church in Memphis. In his younger years, Mr. Scarbrough enjoyed golfing, raising birddogs and bird hunting. He was a much-loved family patriarch and will be greatly missed by all.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ethel Walton Scarbrough; sisters, Erma Dell Givens, Gladys Wilkes, Rowena Oswalt, Marie Justice and Mary Eugene Phillips; a niece, Kay Hill; and step-son, Bobby Andrews.
He is survived by his nieces and nephews, Peggy Clay of Grayson, Barbara O’Steen Messer of Williamson, Eddie Givens of Ruleville, Miss., and Marshall Justice of Jacksonville, Fla.; step-grandchildren, Walton Andrews of Marietta and Vivian Altizer of Kingsport, Tenn.; and four step-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by numerous great- and great-great nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, Dec. 13, at 10 a.m. in Memphis Memory Gardens in Memphis, Tenn., with Rev. John Holt officiating.
