Schools’ 2010 proposed budget avoids pay cuts

The proposed 2010 budget for Pike County schools is in the black and avoids previously threatened pay cuts.

“When we got the revised revenue estimates from the state we were able to reinstate the proposed pay cuts,” said Dr. Michael Duncan, superintendent of schools.

I am very disappointed that this paper misleads the county into thinking that Dr. Bell is happy with things in the school system. He told the board, Dr. Duncan, and those attending the meeting last Thursday night that the two ladies who wrote the letters to the paper were to be commended for their honesty and willingness to ask questions of the board and central office. He went on to say that the schools did not belong to the board of education or to Dr. Duncan. The schools belong to the citizens of Pike, and he hoped that more would voice their opinions and attend meetings. Why didn't this quote end up in the paper? Also, when you pull up the budget online, you can see each teacher's salary by state funds and county funds. Why wasn't this same breakdown given for the administration, coaches, and central office personnel? They don't want anyone to know what gross amounts of money they are paying themselves out of county funds.

While I do agree with points made about Dr. Bell, ALL TEACHER/ADMIN/Central Office salaries are in this budget. I've looked at this several times - it's all in there - even Supt. salary. Check your facts again, I think you'll see I'm correct. The only thing not shown is the small coaching supplement paid to coaches for their extensive hours away from their families, etc...I'm very proud that my tax dollars support the great job ALL school system teachers/coaches, etc... do.

Of course it's all in there; however, where you can see exactly what the state pays the teachers and what the county pays the teachers in a supplement, you do not get that same breakdown for those other positions. Did you see where the HR, Michael Gray, gets @24,000 from the state, but @57,000 from your county tax dollars? No you did not. That is what I am talking about. All of the teachers have noticed it, and so have many people in the county. Duncan does NOT want you to know what kinds of deals he has worked out for all of his friends he has brought in.

Show me where you've seen that...prove it with facts. Seems I need to be enlightened by one so knowledgeable as yourself. By the way - what other county in the area puts out this detailed information such as our county has? I don't know of many.

There is a print-out of the salaries from 2009 that the group that is going to the board meetings has a copy of. Ask anyone in that group that is asking questions to make the board and Duncan more accountable if you don't think I know what I am talking about. If I told you who I was or offered to show you my copy, I would be unemployed by Monday afternoon. I am sure you want to be proud of our county putting this detailed information out there, and if it weren't full of so many cover ups, then yes it would be very honorable. But...for those of us that have seen the pay that central office and admin made during 09 the info on the website is just another slap in the teachers faces. Imagine having Mr. $57,000 coming to tell you that you would lose your supplement, and he was going to take a 3% paycut 'for you'. Poor him, he would go from 57,000 to 55,000 in county funds. He would still make his 24,000 from the state along with that 55,000. He is just a tip of the iceberg of county funds that are being abused, and that 'budget' is not showing it to you!

I noticed on the budget that not all of the Counselor's had their salaries listed. Also, the school improvement guy really took a cut in pay along with some media specialists.
His page said 09 budget. Maybe this is a mistake that can be fixed.

it sounds to me that we might need to take a long hard look at some of these individuals in the BOE. looks like too much emphasis on personal salaries and the good ol' boy club but not enough on what's important. that would be our children. and come on... three separate instances of improper employee morals in a few years.... hell, hire someone to keep these perverts out of our system. my family moved back here years ago for one reason. we liked the school system. for the most part we still do. we know many of the teachers. most that we know ,do a fine outstanding job. get rid of the riff raff...please....

Dr. Duncan is selling out all the top positions to his friends from Clayton and Fayette counties. How many principals are left in the system that are from Pike County? How many??
