Pike County middle and high school students took part in a 12-hour band camp last week but that was just the beginning of their hard work. The PCHS Pirate Regiment Band was the only band from Georgia selected to play in New York City’s annual Veterans Day Parade in November and they must raise the funds for the trip.

Dr. Duncan, you should be ashamed of the way you "budget" your funds allotted to the arts and athletic teams in this county. Our so-called performing arts theater is falling down, leaking, and unusable. Thank heavens for Life Springs Church for allowing us to use their facility (for band camp, too, since the band was not allowed on any of the fields at the school). Other athletic teams at the school have no funding either and rely on parent donations. Have you seen the tennis courts lately? They are in deplorable condition. Come on, Dr. Duncan and the school board- lets start thinking of all the students at Pike County, not just the football players.
Come on people, there are some children (girls in particular) that do not play football. They have the right to participate and be supported by the school just like the boys do.
- pay for a bus to new york
- fix the track
- fix the tennis courts
- fix the auditorium
- pay for janitors
- provide a practice field for the band
- coordinate band practice with putting out poison on the fields and grass cutting
but, we can afford a new car for commandant duncan. and who pays for all those lunches i see duncan pick up when he's out with his cronies?
By the way, you think insulting hard working musicians is going to save you any money? If you're so worried about your money, how about you get a job delivering pizzas instead of surfing the web insulting kids.
As far as the statement of "Nobody goes to the game to see your kid play the trumpet....they go to see the game", you too have missed the point of high school football, basketball, baseball, etc.. Extracurriculars are there for ALL of the children to participate. The game is about all of the kids. It's about the kid who plays the game, it's about the boy who gets to be the team manager, it's about the girls who wants to cheer, it's about the child who wants to play in the band. Participating in an extracurricular activity allows children to explore different activities that maybe they may not have otherwise had the opportunity to try. Give us a break and remember, Pike County is for all of the kids. It's for the jocks, the nerds, the punks, the special ed kids... everybody. Let's just looking at other places the money needs to go... not just the football program.
People like #4.1 thinks it should come out of tax money. Thats an O'Bama voter there!
a quote of a drama queen. everybody i know is making money. there is plenty of money being made if you have the right skills and have made the right career choice in life. the walmart parking lot must have been empty when you drove by. i hate drama queens.
but being i pay taxes and have no kids in school what is it fair for me to get? a trip to bermuda? quit teaching kids to be like obama. if you can't afford it you can't have it. even obama said "we have to start living within our means". so really your mentality is worse then obamas.
As far as the kids and the trip to New York, we would appreciate anyone willing to donate, or come to a car wash or sponsor a hole at the golf tournament.
Many great businesses in Pike County already have and to those we say "Thanks!!".
#1-We do not expect a handout from anyone. We have requested funds from the BOE to help pay for music for our kids to play and to buy large instruments that students don't traditionally buy, but are usually owned by each school band.
#2-The band booster parents spend countless hours each week during football season buying, stocking and cooking food to serve to people at the football games. We spend money we have, stay within our budget, and work hard to save what we earn to be able to buy the instruments that the band needs (and does not have school funds to buy).
#3-Our children work very hard to learn how to play their instruments, to learn the music, and then have already in the past 3 weeks, spent 80 hours in the heat starting to learn a new show to present at the football games and at marching band competitions.
#4-Band instruments are not cheap and most of us are still working to pay for our child's own personal instrument.
Yes, the article requests that those who would like to support the band in the upcoming trip to NYC to please make a donation. The key phrase is "those who would like to support..." If you do not believe in the band and what they are working for, please do not belittle the hard work they are doing on this site. Just don't donate. It's that simple. This is an expensive trip and we have asked for support from the community at large and from local businesses, but that's all it is, a request. Not a demand for money to which we feel "entitled". I do not sit around waiting for a handout from anyone. I work full-time and attend college full-time to earn another degree while taking care of my family.
My husband and I plan to go to NYC (on our own dime) to cheer on our son and witness this historic event of a national tragedy. This is not an opportunity for us to "get rid of him" for a few days.
The band boosters club is no different from any other parent group at Pike County schools. We love our kids, support their hard work, and work hard to provide for the whole group, not just our own child. All groups request funds at one time or another, it's a fact of life. If you support the group and can afford to give, then great. If you support the group and can offer a kind and encouraging word (even without money), then great. But if you have nothing positive to say about the group and its hard work, then hush. You are demeaning and belittling and showing your own ignorance. You hide behind "anonymous" and attack what you do not understand. My kids don't need support from people like you, they just need for you to keep your mean-spirited words to yourself.
