On Saturday, Jan. 4 at approximately midnight Pike County Sheriff’s Office investigators were alerted by Spalding Regional Hospital about a burned individual who had been brought in for treatment. The burned person, Michael May, 26, had suffered second and third degree burns to almost 50 percent of his body. He had also made statements to hospital staff that another person had done this to him purposefully by dousing him with gasoline and lighting him on fire. [Full story »]

On Saturday, Jan. 11, the J. Joel Edwards Public Library will be hosting the grand opening for its new addition, the STEAM Room.

“STEAM Education is a hands-on learning initiative that encourages growth through science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics,” said Alyssa Williams. “This approach to learning uses contemporary advancements to foster critical thinking, problem solving, and curiosity in all ages. The purpose of this room is also to supply community members and library patrons with new and updated resources that will assist in day-to-day tasks.” [Full story »] 

Mr. John Brian Batchelor, Sr., age 51, of Concord, passed away December 31, 2019, at Upson Regional Medical Center.  Brian grew up in Eatonton.  He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in Operation Desert Storm. After his active duty, Brian joined the Army National Guard. He had been in the fire protection industry for the last 26 years, and was currently working as an inspector for Cintas Fire Protection in Norcross. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, cutting firewood, playing pool and being outdoors. Brian was a loving and dedicated husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and friend to many. He loved being with his family, especially spending time with his grandchildren. The man that stood for so much, he was a value to anyone’s life just knowing him.  Genuinely give you the shirt off of his back kinda man!   [Full story »]
