American Pickers could visit Pike

The History Channel’s American Pickers is looking for locations in Georgia to film new episodes this winter.

Pike and multiple other counties are now under a tornado watch that was issued at noon. The watch period continues until 6 p.m. Wednesday.

A line of strong storms is approaching the area with high winds, heavy rains and lightning forecast.

Three local men who were Killed In Action or Missing In Action during combat in World War II will be honored at a Saturday, Dec. 3 Induction Ceremony hosted by the Pike County American Legion Family. The ceremony will honor Private First Class Ralph E. Bishop, Private Tilton C. Gooden and Staff Sergeant Joel M. Matthews at 10 a.m. at the Pike County School Auditorium on Highway 19 south in Zebulon. [Full story »]

Lawsuit over Hughley Road development settled

Pending litigation among the city of Zebulon, Brent Pike LLC and Concerned Citizens of Pike Inc. reached an agreement within 30 minutes of the case convening in the Pike County courtroom on Nov. 21. According to the terms of the agreement, the development will not increase in size due to the reduction of density. The developer has agreed to place single family dwellings on one acre lots with a minimum size for each home set at 1,850 heated square feet. The legal fees incurred by the suit will be the responsibility of all parties to pay their own cost. [Full story »]

Mr. James Samuel Wilson, age 71, of Zebulon, passed away November 26, 2016, at Emory University Hospital. Mr. Wilson was born in Metter on January 15, 1945, son of the late James Elwood Wilson, Sr., and the late Ola Ree Wilson. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corp. James worked for Delta Airlines for 31 years before retiring. He loved the outdoors and was a dedicated and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. [Full story »]

Old Zebulon School building listed as one of Georgia’s ‘Places in Peril’

A local landmark was recently listed as one of the top 10 Places in Peril in the state by the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation. Local fundraising efforts are under way to save the Old Zebulon School by replacing the roof. The goal for the current Save the Roof fundraising effort is $100,000. All donations made by Dec. 24 will be doubled by an anonymous donor who has agreed to match donations up to $50,000. Donations can be made at crowdrise.com under Save the Old Zebulon School or at any United Bank branch. Those who donate before Jan. 1 will be placed on the Head of the Class list to be displayed on a permanent plaque in the school. [Full story »]

Ephesians 5:18-20 says, “... be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

If we believe our history books, the Pilgrims rejoiced and gave thanks as this verse instructs. I am sure the Pilgrims were happy they survived the first year in their new land regardless of if they celebrated the way we are told or not. I wonder if we are missing the true meaning and intent of giving thanks. Our nation is one of overindulgence, excess to the extreme, lust and greed. We are not satisfied with what we have and if we are, it is only until the next shiny object attracts our attention. [Full story »]
