Pike County’s top teachers were honored at the Oct. 4 board of education meeting.

A Pike County Middle School student was recently diagnosed with bacterial meningitis, prompting school officials to send a message to all parents. The school district has provided information to public health officials about students who may have come in contact with the infected student. Officials from the Georgia Department of Public Health District 4 are reviewing immunization records of those students and will contact parents by phone is the student needs to receive antibiotics or is at risk. UPDATE: Michael Moore, 52, of Forest Park was the man who died after being struck with an asphalt paver during resurfacing work on Kings Bridge Road. Please keep his family in your prayers.

Football players, cheerleaders, fans and members of the community - as well as recreation football players and cheerleaders - will be able to enjoy the new stadium upgrades at the Friday, Oct. 14 home game. Gates will open at 5:45 p.m. to allow fans to explore the new facility. The new stadium has three separate buildings, providing concessions and restrooms. The building nearest the south gate is the ticket booth and will serve as the only point of entry for fans at all athletic events. The new stadium seating will comfortably seat many more and is even equipped with emergency lights in case of a power outage. The stadium’s new press box has three rooms and will allow the officials and announcer to work in the center room while home and away coaches work in the rooms on either side. A new sound system will allow everyone to hear announcements and music more clearly at events. [Full story »] 

The Lady Pirates found themselves in the last place they expected to be, in the losers bracket late on a Wednesday night getting beat by Rutland High School and facing three games Thursday. They won their first game 12-1 over Peach County to avoid elimination and played for first or second place in the region against Rutland, who had put them in the losers bracket. [Full story »]
