Pike sheriff's deputies checked a local airport Saturday evening as part of a search for a downed aircraft that was later found to have crashed near Senoia, killing two passengers onboard.

Using the identification number of the aircraft searched for, the Journal Reporter has determined the identity of its owner, one of the likely victims in the crash.

They did not take action on two requests for special exceptions for solar photovoltaic farms that could potentially bring in several million dollars in tax revenues over the next 10 years. Both Pike County commissioners and the school board will increase millage rates due in part to decreasing property values in the area. Commissioners will increase the property taxes by 10.83% over the rollback millage rate and the school board will increase taxes by 1.55% over the rollback rate. [Full story »]

Case of rabies confirmed in Molena

A case of rabies was confirmed in Molena after a family’s goat tested positive July 24. The goat - which was part of a herd of 17 others on McCrary Road - was put down by a veterinarian and since the owner was exposed to the goat’s saliva, the animal was tested for rabies. Henry Jordan and other family members have since received post-exposure rabies vaccinations. [Full story »]
