Some of Pike County’s pioneers in the civil rights movement will be featured during a Black History Month program sponsored by the MLK Jr. committee. The program will also feature several plays. It is open to everyone in the community and will be held at the Pike County school auditorium on Feb. 26 from 5 to 9 p.m.

speaking of historic black leaders...

did you all see that fred blackmon voted to extend the superintendents contract for another 3 years? that's 150,000 a year for 3 years in a school system with just 3700 students. to give you a reference point, spalding county super only makes 100,000 per year for over 10,000 students.

i hope all you people who re-elected blackmon feel as foolish as you appear.

blackmon has presided over 25+ years of increased spending in the school system. he has voted to increase the budget over the last 10 years so that it now costs 3 times as much to educate a student and that is adjusted for inflation.

hope you all enjoy fred blackmon for the next 10 years.

Using that same analogy, you can buy running shoes at Walmart for $29 or go to Sports Authority and pay $129. I will stick with the $129 Asics because the cheap ones make my feet hurt; a lesson I learned first hand a long, long time ago...

And, I like Fred Blackmon. I'm glad he served while I was in PiCoHi and I'm glad he's there now. He's a good man and Pike needs more like him.

if the school system had improved to be 3 times better than it was 10 years ago danny, i would agree. but we are paying 3 times as much for basically less education than we were getting 10 years ago.

- auditorium falling down
- classes where all the kids can't have a book because we are spending so much on administration we can't afford to educate
- classes where we don't have a teacher on-site and are teaching kids using a graduate student (who can't spell) from UGA.

I agree, you don't always get what you pay for and this Super has not delivered a $129K performance... we could hire a new Super AND a teacher for his salary...

Just curious, does Pike County High require that students be American citizens? I think they did in the past, but so did the oval office.

Griffin super makes a LOT more than 100,000...the principal at Spalding High makes that much, and the head football coach at Griffin doesn't make much less than that.

Correction - Spalding High principal made almost 113,000 in 2010! If you compare Pike's educator salaries to those of other counties around the state (open.georgia.gov), you will see that they are very low, particularly the principals/assistant principals and central office staff.

When we married and had kids we lived in Spalding for a short time. Moved back to Pike as soon as we were able to sell out.

Having had kids in both systems, and trust me. It is.

i don't agree that it's that much better here. better yes, but not that much. and i would hazard a guess it's more due to the quality of the students and parents not the educators. if you look at the socio-economic differences between GSCS and PCS you can clearly see why schools are better here. and i commend you CR for sacrificing to bring your kids to a better school system in order to escape the issues with GSCS. keep in mind, when you were there, the superintendent was being paid in the 180,000 range and that made no difference in the quality of education.

i think you will find that the places where the wages are higher are places where the incumbent has been there a long time. when they go out for a new job, they will find wages much lower.

regardless, here are the figures as i see them.

according to school bug, pike county has 3007 students and griffin-spalding has 10,693.

pike county is paying $47.84 per student for a superintendent

griffin-spalding is paying $12.71 per student.

pike county is paying nearly 4x (3.75) as much per student for a superintendent.

i don't believe that duncan is worth 4x what we could pay someone else. do you?

That's a really bad math example. Using your figure, $12.71 per student, 3007 students, means you think you can get an administrator for $38,000.

So, what if by chance we could get a top-notch PhD recruit to relocate to Pike County. What would they be worth? Suppose it's $120,000. The turnover requirements for a system change like that will cost more than the $30,000 you would save. And, after 3 years when the new guy's salary is thrown around the community blogspots, you'll be ready to get rid of him, too.

Of course not. I'd rather get a fair deal on the position. We have a fair deal, that's what I'm saying. Flipping that job isn't going to get you more teachers or books.

And, Fred Blackmon got the votes. I voted for him when I lived in his district, and I'll vote for him again if given the choice.

just some more bad math for you (from open.georgia.gov).

pike county in 2010 spent 41.5% of it's salary budget on non-teaching positions and 58.5% on teaching positions. that's a total of 16m dollars. there is another 9m dollars spent on other overheads such as buses, maintenance, etc.

this means pike county spends approximately 38.4% of the budget teaching and 61.6% of the budget on overhead. know any businesses that can survive like this?

What is this Pre-K crap? Our poor teachers will be majoring in Diaper Changing 101 next. Just take them from the maternity ward to the school. Tax payers got you covered. Oh you are out of pampers, no problem, we got tax money.

Why are schools serving breakfast now? Can you answer that for me educator? If parents can't afford feeding........quit breeding.

People who are paid with tax money should have economic sacrifices just as everyone else in the free world. Taxpayers should not take the hit for everyone who would like pay increases? Elected officials should be in the same category...I will guarantee you.......anyone out there in Blogland willing to take the bet that 10% of non-teachers could be cut from the school system and never be missed. Assistants and assistants to the assistants and secretaries for the assistant to the assistants, etc. It has gotten totally ridiculous!

With all due respect, Ms Tolley, you obviously do not know what it takes to run a quality school system. Just curious, how many days have you spent inside school buildings observing just what is taking place(and what is NOT taking place because of budget cuts)? You people don't want to pay teachers their due, want to cut staff, etc. etc. but then you also want the county to have a good school system? Which do you want, because you can't have both. Pike misses out on a lot of quality teachers because of their low teacher supplement - it's the lowest I've ever heard of. People can drive here to get $1000 supplement, or they can go just 12 miles up to Griffin to get $4000, or 20 more miles up to Henry to get $7000 a year extra. Believe me, educators are not over-paid in Pike County by any means.

educator, i think you will find in today's job market that you won't be getting as much as you get now.

the super in GSCS before this one made around 180,000. when they hired a new one, the job only paid 113,000. that should give you a hint about which direction wages are heading.

i would suggest to anyone in the school system here in PC who thinks they aren't paid well enough to please find employment elsewhere. i think all those henry and clayton county automobiles i see parked in the teacher's parking lot would be gone if they could make better money without having to drive all the way down here.

With all due respect educator, will you point out in my blog the point at which I say anything about teachers, please? May I have your permission to come in and sit a couple weeks with free reign to roam as I please? I am very honest. I would give honest reviews. Get me that permission and put your name on the blog....until then........my opinion remains unchanged.

I have the utmost respect for teachers. Follow the patterns of Rosemary Dunn Carter. I am sure she has talents like Cheryl Dunn Hammond. Cheryl was a wonderful teacher. Pike was a wonderful school.

Answer my first sentence, ok?

Are u qualified to give reviews? Do you know how to critique a teacher's performance? When is the last time you been in a classroom? If you go into the classroom and PCS adopt your style would it lose its accredidation? Do you live in Pike? Do you live in Lamar? Do you have any children in PCS to give you the right to sit in a classroom? Would you want strange people with no credentials hanging out in your child's classroom? Why do you think you are qualified to critigue anyone?

Total Expenditures: $13,616,369,082
Teacher Expenditures: $5,015,828,482
Percent Spent on Teachers: 37%

Bring it on. Get me that free pass to roam and take notes, educator. In fact, will you accompany me? The teachers would get raises when I finished and still have money left over.

I would have loved to be in a classroom, helped out my childs teacher. I asked, but she said NO. Later I found out the reason for this was that the school didn't want me to know how bad my childs learning problems were, and didn't want me to know that they were not helping her. Yes, this is PIKE CO, considered the BEST school system around here. Yea, right.

The school sytems are full of liberal progressive educators pursuing their own agendas to the detriment of students. Children of today are taught not to excel nor be self- reliant. Instead, they are cajoled to be "not better than anyone elese, we are all the same" and to sign up for ALL government welfare programs.

Students are taught it is better to be a community organizer than a scientist, doctor, tradesman, etc. It is the everyday Democrap Liberal Obummer Agenda foisted upon our students using lies and revisionist history.
