Verla Pickell
Ms. Verla Pickell, age 92, of Griffin, passed away Sept. 11, 2012 at Heritage Inn Nursing Home, Barnesville.
She was born June 23, 1920 in Martel, Tenn., (Loudon County), to the late William Lafal Pickell and Cora Purkey Pickell. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Ima Pickell Magill; and brother, Boyd Pickell. She was a store manager for McCrory-McClelland-Green for many years and retired from McClelland’s in Griffin in 1985. Ms. Pickell attended Brooks Congregational Holiness Church and The First Baptist Church of Zebulon. She enjoyed sewing, reading, cooking, canning and gardening and she loved flowers.
She is survived by her nieces and nephews, Ruth Davis and husband John of Milner, R.L. Magill and wife Susan, Brenda Boles and husband Jimmy, all of Harriman, Tenn., Mitchell Magill of Rockwood, Tenn., and Karenia Breazeale and husband Brent of Harriman, Tenn.; a special brother-in-law, Ralph Magill Sr. and wife Betty of Harriman; sister-in-law, Ruth Pickell of Lenoir City, Tenn.; great-nieces and -nephews, Randy Davis and Kevin Davis of Milner, Amanda L. Crass and husband Sam and Brian N. Magill and wife Misty of Harriman, Jim Boles and wife Kelly of Kingston, Tenn., Travis Boles and wife Michelle of Harriman and Tabby Craig of Rockwood, Tenn.; great-great nieces and -nephews: Anna-Marie Davis of Milner, Makenzie Crass, Morgan Crass, Isabel Magill and Maddox Magill, all of Harriman, Spencer Boles and Nicholas Boles of Kingston, Jacobe Craig of Rockwood, Gabriel Breazeale and Aaron Breazeale of Harriman.
Friends visited the family on Saturday, Sept. 15, from 12 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services followed at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home with Rev. Gene Middlebrooks officiating. Interment followed in Eastview Cemetery in Zebulon.

Melvin W. Anderson
Mr. Melvin W. Anderson, age 80, of Molena, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012.
He was born in Atlanta May 28, 1932 to the late Melvin W. Anderson Sr. and Lucille Reynolds Anderson of Rockmart. In his early career he was the managing owner of Empire Trucking Company in Atlanta. After moving to Molena in 1960, he owned and managed real estate. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving during the Korean Conflict. He was a faithful member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Molena, where he served as Sunday school superintendent, deacon emeritus and was an active member of the senior men’s Sunday school class. He enjoyed golfing and was an avid Georgia football fan. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Bettye Robertson of Atlanta and Jimmie McCoy of Cedartown.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Elsie Lawrence Anderson; son, John Gregg Anderson of Molena; daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Jesse Anthony of Williamson; sister, Bobbie Dawson of Molena; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Mac and Lynn McCoy of Cedartown; grandchildren and their spouses, Joy and Andrew Whisenhunt of Augusta, Jessica and Brandon Pierce of Williamson, Lawrence Barker Anderson and Marshall Apple Anderson, both of Atlanta; great-grandchildren, Render Grace Pierce, Ivy Harper Pierce and Wyatt Andrew Whisenhunt; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit the family on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 3-4 p.m. at Mt. Olive Baptist Church. A memorial service will follow at 4 p.m. at the church.
