Independence Day celebrations planned

Thousands are expected to attend a local Independence Day celebration in Pike County hosted by Christ Chapel Sunday, July 1. The celebration will begin at 4 p.m. with the annual Fourth of July parade starting from the primary school and proceeding through downtown Zebulon. The parade, with the theme ‘We The People,’ is sponsored by Pike County Emergency Services and will lead everyone back to Chapelstock – a free community event featuring live bands and a fireworks show. The Pike County Recreation Authority will host the first Movies in the Park presentation Friday night as Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked is shown on screen at the lower football fields around dark. Inflatables and pre-show music will be part of the event and the whole community is invited to bring a chairs or blankets and a picnic or buy concessions for a night of free family fun. As campaigns for local offices reach full steam in June and July this year, citizens can prepare to cast their votes one of three ways – in early voting which starts July 10, by absentee ballot which can be ordered now, or on Election Day which is set for July 31 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. This year, early voting has been reduced from a 45 day period to 16 business days and Saturday, July 21.
