Killer of local officer on trial
The killer of Pike County resident and Clayton County sheriff deputy Richard "Rick" Daly has been in court this week facing charges of malice murder, felony murder aggravated assault of a peace officer, gun possession while committing a felony and more. Jonathan Bun was 17 when he fatally shot officer Daly last year on July 20 as Daly attempted to serve an arrest warrant for a previous alleged armed robbery.

New county budget proposed

Pirates host state playoffs

In the Pirates’ last regular game of the season the Luella Lions pushed ahead late in the game for an 11-6 win on April 25. The Pirates ended their regular season with a 19-7 record overall and 14-2 in region 4-AA. The first round of the state playoffs will start Friday, May 4, as the Pirates host the Dublin Irish. A doubleheader is slated to start at 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Should a game three be needed it will be played on Saturday at 3 p.m. in Zebulon as well. [Full story »]

Courthouse plans changed again
County commissioners revisited courthouse plans at the Tuesday, April 24, meeting after voting 3-2 to purchase new HVAC units and save $77,000 with a composite roof instead of metal roofing at the April 11 meeting. They voted to go with the original plan for a metal roof and discussed keeping the courtroom balcony.
