The Georgia Forestry Commission is giving away 60,000 tree seedlings statewide in celebration of the health and sustainability of Georgia forests and the movie, The Lorax. In conjunction with the release of Dr. Seuss' classic tale about ecosystem awareness, the GFC will distribute free seedlings grown at its Flint River nursery on the film's opening day, Friday, March 2. Beginning March 3, geocaching enthusiasts will be able to search for bags of tree seeds hidden in Georgia's state parks.

Pike County High School Pirates baseball teams had a strong start to the 2012 season, with the varsity team going 2-1 to start the season and JV team winning their season opener. The JV will play Wednesday at home at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity Pirates will play Wednesday at Gordon College, Friday at Perimeter College and Tuesday at home for a doubleheader to start at 4:30 p.m. against Southwest Macon.

Two local seniors have been named STAR students by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators. The Student Teacher Achievement Recognition program selection is based on SAT scores and aims to honor outstanding high school seniors and the teachers who have been most instrumental in their academic development. STAR students must select a STAR teacher who most inspired them on their journey to excellence. For the first time, a CrossPointe Christian Academy student was recognized as a STAR student.

Pike County voter turnout is very low in the presidential preferential primary. A total of 245 advanced voters have taken advantage of early voting as of press time Monday, Feb. 27. Absentee ballots have been received from 75 voters. Only four voters took advantage of advanced voting Saturday, Feb. 25.

On Monday night, Feb. 20, sheriff’s deputies were called to the Amberwood Subdivision in reference to shots being fired. A description of the vehicles involved in the shooting were given to law enforcement officers and deputies located one vehicle on Cowan Road. The Griffin Police Department located the second vehicle on the N. Expressway near Ellis Road. Investigators determined the violence was gang related and suspects arrested were affiliated with either the Ratchet Boys or Southside Gang.

A couple of months ago I got a Sonia Leigh CD and took it on a road trip with me. I listened to it throughout about 10 times. I knew after the first round through the CD I was a Sonia Leigh fan. She can absolutely put me in high gear with her soulful, bluesy, country rock vocals. I decided I’d have to see her in person to get the total effect of this local Pike County girl.
