County approves DeltAlert system

Commissioners voted Dec. 14 to approve a software license and agreement with DeltAlert to provide a web-based telephone emergency notification system for citizens in case of emergencies. The system would rapidly initiate alerts to home and cell phones during local, state and national emergencies. The cost for the alert system is $14,700, with a grant paying half of the total cost. Vacancy on library board

The Pike County Board of Commissioners' office is accepting applications for one board position on the J. Joel Edwards Public Library Board to fill an unexpired three-year term, set to expire Aug. 31. The Library Board meets quarterly. An appointee to the Library Board vacancy must satisfactorily clear a criminal history check. [Full story »]

New low for Flint River

The Flint River, which borders Pike County, has been named number seven on the list in the Georgia Dirty Dozen 2011 worst offenses against Georgia’s water. The list is compiled by the Georgia Water Coalition, part of the Georgia River Network organization. [Full story »] 

Auditorium closed

The Pike County school system auditorium off Highway 19 has been closed indefinitely until needed improvements can be made. Superintendent Dr. Michael Duncan said the auditorium’s roof leaks and the building has foundational issues as well. [Full story »] 

Jimmy Hammett has died

Barnesville native Jimmy Hammett died Thursday. Hammett pastored churches in Pike County and was a historian who chronicled the life of Ches McCartney, also known as the Goatman.
