Pike joblessness lowest in region

Pike County’s joblessness was at 9.8% in August down from 10.3% in July. It was 9.8% in August 2010. This means Pike has reclaimed its regional position of both lowest joblessness and the only Three Rivers county under the 10% mark. [Full story »]

Companion Animal Rescue and Education out of Molena is a small all-volunteer animal rescue group that is state licensed. C.A.R.E. helps adopt out abandoned animals in Pike County and will display many of the rescued dogs at PetSense stores in Thomaston and Griffin this Saturday, Oct. 1 and Sunday, Oct. 2. When her husband died in a car wreck in 1962, Marie Rogers decided to carry on the family’s tradition of creating and selling pottery in Meansville. Her pottery was much different from her husband’s but in many ways more valuable because of that. [Full story »]

Meansville muscadines ready to pick

A Meansville family has sold millions of muscadines since the 1970s when Carl and Louise Cochran planted their first vines there. They lived on Highway 109 in Meansville for about 20 years before they planted the first muscadine varieties. Now there are around three acres of ripe fruit that is open to the public to pick for themselves or purchase already picked. [Full story »]

Musical master and local legend John Williams, 75, passed away Sept. 6. He was one of the founders of the Music Barn in Williamson and an honorary inductee into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1998 for his contributions to bluegrass music. [Full story »]

Another of Pike County’s historic downtown buildings has become a memory – but the change to the courthouse square is set to bring new jobs to the county. The 100-year-old building was on the east side of the Zebulon courthouse square and was at one time the home of Bankston Lumber Company. United Bank purchased the building about three months ago and plans to rebuild on the site with the addition of about a dozen new employees. [Full story »]

Pike County commissioners struck down a request to approve a referendum to possibly allow Sunday sales of alcohol in the county by a 3-2 vote at the Aug. 30 meeting. Nawaid Sadid of the Mountain View Convenience Store asked the commission to consider a resolution to call for authorization of Sunday package sales as allowed by Senate Bill 10. [Full story »]
