Gov. Nathan Deal announced today that Caterpillar, Inc. (NYSE: CAT) will make a major investment in its Griffin Engine Center in Spalding County. The Peoria, Ill.-based company will create at least 200 jobs and invest $120 million in machinery, equipment and upgrades to the existing facility. [Full story »]

Walter Geiger, publisher of The Journal Reporter and pikecountygeorgia.com, has been in acute renal failure and a patient at Macon Medical Center since Friday. Currently undergoing dialysis, his nephrologist is optimistic he will regain kidney function.

Board of education members voted June 14 to approve the fiscal year 2012 budget with a custodial contract that cuts 23 local employees, saving the school $224,920. Two board members, Fred Blackmon and Roger Green, opposed the decision but the budget was approved by a 4-2 vote. The school’s general fund budget calls for revenues of $22,011,621 with expenditures of $21,911,621 and $100,000 allocated to the reserve fund. [Full story »]

A public hearing to discuss the proposed Fiscal Year 2011-12 budget became heated Wednesday, June 8 as department heads and elected officials discussed the $865,298 cuts made by commis- sioners and additional proposed cuts to Magistrate court suggested by commissioner Carol Bass.

A tractor trailer hauling lime caught fire Tuesday around noon on Highway 18 West near Bottoms Road. The highway was closed to traffic as firefighters doused the flames through the toxic smoke. DOT workers were called in to remove the lime and repair fire damage on the highway before the road was reopened just after 4 p.m. [Full story »]
