County approves budget

Commissioners met Tuesday, June 28 for final adoption of Pike County’s 2011-12 budget. It was reduced by 10.3% from last year’s approved budget. The general fund budget totals $8,741,968 after $900,630 in cuts. The new budget year begins July 1. The Journal Reporter went to press before the final budget adoption. [Full story »]

Of the 236 Pike students taking the full four Georgia High School Graduation Tests, 75% passed it on the first try. They have four more opportunities to take it while enrolled in school. Graduation testing will be phased out during the 2011-12 school year. [Full story »]

Recently discovered infestations of cogongrass in Pike and Upson counties have been eradicated by the Georgia Forestry Commission. The infestation in Upson was discovered by an alert landowner. In Pike, a passerby recognized cogongrass on a roadside. Both notified the GFC, whose forest health professionals positively identified the invasive weed and sprayed the infestations with herbicides. This was the first infestation found in Upson and the second confirmed in Pike. [Full story »]
