PCMS track teams are 2011 champions
The middle school track and field experienced a victorious year with an undefeated girls team garnering the 2011 CGMSL championship in track and field. The boys team won as well, finishing third in the championship event held at Crawford County Middle School.

Virginia “Ginger” Davis, 59, of Griffin, died May 6, 2011. Friends visited the family on Sunday from 5-7 p.m. at Moody Funeral home. A graveside service will be held Monday, May 9 at 2 p.m. at The Rock Methodist Church Cemetery.

County hopes to eradicate invasive grass
Citizens of Pike County should be on the lookout for infestations of cogongrass, one of the worst invasive plants in America. The inedible and rapidly spreading foreign species of grass was discovered in northern Pike County along Highway 19 in 2010. The infestation was eradicated by the Georgia Forestry Commission.

Ready to race
After 42 years of silence, the Zebulon Speedway will roar to life May 7 with its grand opening celebration. The dirt track originally opened in 1966 as the Zebulon Crazy 8 Speedway and closed just a few years later in 1969. Now the speedway will open as a go kart track with the possibility of expanding to legend and winged outlaw cars in future seasons.

With a 22-4 record and a ranking of fifth in the state in the AA classification, the Pirates have high hopes of making it to the big dance in about a month. The Pirates will host the Brantley County Blue Herons this Friday in Zebulon at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. A game three would be played Saturday at 1 p.m. if needed. [Full story »]

County could cut almost $1 million from budget
Pike commissioners heard the proposed new budget is a 9.8% reduction from last year’s budget at their Tuesday, April 26 meeting. According to county manager Bill Sawyer, the current fiscal year budget is $9.6 million and the proposed budget for the coming fiscal year is $8.7, a total reduction of $865,298.

Two drop offs for donations in Zebulon
Tornados touched down all around Pike early April 28, but the county saw very little damage from the deadly storm. Strong winds tore trees in half along Highway 19 south as tornado-force winds blew the storm into Lamar County where it destroyed several homes and businesses and killed two residents.
