Back in the 1960s the state’s political leadership realized that increasing the educational levels of the citizenry would be essential if Georgia were to prosper in the modern world. The number of public colleges was expanded so that most of the populace would have at least a two-year college within commuting distance.

New Georgia laws now make it illegal to read or send text messages for all drivers and eliminate some teenagers' cell phone use all together. The laws go into effect Thursday and are punishable by a $150 fine and a point reduction from drivers' licenses.

Suspect in Molena armed robbery arrested
A suspect has been arrested in the armed robbery of the Molena Food Mart on June 14 and is thought to be involved in several armed robberies in Upson County. The Molena gas station’s female clerk was held at gunpoint until money from the register was handed over. A regular customer ran the masked robber from the store and fired shots from his own weapon. Robert Tucker III was arrested and is being held at the Upson County jail.

No water woes here
The water is still safe to drink in Pike County while residents in Upson County have been forced to boil their water to eliminate contaminants twice in the last six months. A water main break June 21 shut the water treatment plant down for repairs, affecting more than 2,000 customers and lasting five days. In February, possibly untreated water in the system forced schools and businesses there to close, costing hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Ingredients:
1 4-inch piece of baguette
2 slices low sodium applewood-smoked bacon
1 1/2 tsp. store bought pesto
1 1/2 tsp. low fat mayo
1 spear romaine lettuce
2 thick slices of heirloom tomato
1 thick slice of fresh mozzarella
kosher salt and fresh ground pepper
Slice the baguette open, leaving one side attached to form a hinge. Cook the bacon in a skillet over low heat until crispy; drain on paper towels.
Combine the pesto with the mayonnaise and smear on the bottom part of the bread. Layer the romaine on the bread, then the tomato, bacon and mozzarella. Season with salt and pepper. [Full story »]
