Between Monday, May 17, and Friday, May 21, the sheriff’s office made the following arrests:
Avis Lamont Colquitt, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute;
Jonathan Evan Edalgo, fleeing and attempting to elude and speeding;
Mario Reyes Garcia, driving without a license and speeding;
Aaron Shaw Hurd, speeding, failure to maintain lane, obscured tag, fleeing and attempting to elude, driving on the wrong side of road, failure to signal when turning, reckless driving, failure to signal when changing lane, improper use of central turn lane and violation of instructional permit;
James Anthony Lawrence, probation violation;
Dylan Gregory Webster, possession of less than an ounce of marijuana, no seat belt and driving without license on person. [Full story »]

Beer Can Chicken

Beer Can Chicken Rub:
2 tablespoons smoked paprika
2 tablespoons salt
2 tablespoons onion powder
1 tablespoon cayenne pepper
1 tablespoon ground cumin
2 teaspoons dried thyme
2 teaspoons dried oregano
2 teaspoons black pepper
2 teaspoons garlic powder

For the Chicken:
4 lb. whole chicken, washed and dried
Vegetable oil
Beer Can Chicken Rub
1 (12-ounce) can beer

Directions for the chicken rub:
In a small bowl mix all the ingredients together and use for the grilled chicken. You can store extra rub mixture in an airtight container for up to 6 months.

For the chicken:
Preheat your grill to medium-high heat.

Rub the chicken and its cavity down with the vegetable oil. Season the chicken with rub mixture, remembering to season the cavity. Pour out 1/4 of the beer and sit the chicken on top of the beer can. Place the chicken in the center of the hot grill and cover. Cook the chicken for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, or until an instant-read thermometer registers 165 degrees F. Once cooked, cover loosely with foil and let rest for 10 minutes before carving. [Full story »]

This is not the culture war of the 1990s. It is not a fight over guns, gays or abortion. Those old battles have been eclipsed by a new struggle between two competing visions of the country's future. In one, America will continue to be an exceptional nation organized around the principles of free enterprise -- limited government, a reliance on entrepreneurship and rewards determined by market forces. In the other, America will move toward European-style statism grounded in expanding bureaucracies, a managed economy and large-scale income redistribution. These visions are not reconcilable. Teen Challenge escapee arrested at residence

Another teen escaped from Teen Challenge early in the morning Monday, May 24. The 16-year-old white male from Blackshear was taken into custody at a home on McCorkle Curve Road in Upson County after residents said they kept him occupied by allowing him to make phone calls to his parents and girlfriend. Six teenagers have now escaped from the facility in the year it's been open. [Full story »]

From the Muslm American Society....

On May 18, Muslim American Society Freedom (MASF) joined the ACLU and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF) along with other plaintiffs in filing a lawsuit in the US District Court of Arizona challenging Arizona's new law requiring police to demand "papers" from people they stop who they suspect are not authorized to be in the US.

MASF is a civic and civil rights advocacy division of the Muslim American Society, America's largest Muslim grassroot organization. [Full story »]

Forestry Field Day set for May 27

The Pike County Farm Bureau is inviting land owners to a Forestry Field Day to learn how best to manage timber tracts and forest land. A morning session will be held Thursday, May 27 in the Farm Bureau conference room at 10 a.m., lunch will be served at noon and participants can travel out to a nearby timber tract to learn about prescribed burning, thinning timber and other forestry practices. The Pike Pirates defeated the top-ranked Cook County Hornets 5-4 in the first game of a playoff doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Jack Pilkenton Field.
