Between Monday, Dec. 28, 2009, and Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010, the sheriff’s office made the following arrests:
Steven Carlton Bartlett, bench warrant and two counts possession of controlled substance;
Anthony Lamar Burden, armed robbery, possession of firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm or knife during commission of a crime and probation violation;
Barbara Dawn Coker, two counts fraud;
Clinton Michael Edwards, reckless driving, two counts aggressive driving, racing on highway or street and speeding;
Amanda C. Harrill, deposit account fraud;
Sherry Lynn Hayes, hold for Clayton County;
Daniel Gordon Wheless, DUI, no insurance and expired registration;

Sometimes we have to be brave enough to state the obvious without fear of Newton's law or paradox or even being wrong. It is cold outside.

Spinach Artichoke Salad

Ingredients:
3/4 pound, 4 to 5 cups, baby spinach, packed
2 (15-ounce) cans artichoke hearts packed in water, drained and sliced
1 clove garlic, finely chopped
2 teaspoons lemon zest
1 tablespoon lemon juice
2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
1/4 to 1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil
Salt and pepper
A handful shredded Parmigiano-Reggiano

Directions:
Combine spinach and artichokes. Place garlic, lemon zest and juice in small dish and add vinegar. Let it stand 5 minutes then whisk in extra-virgin olive oil. Pour oil and vinegar dressing over salad and toss to combine. Season the salad with salt and pepper, to your taste. Top the salad with cheese then serve.

Thomas College, a liberal arts school in Maine, advertises itself as Home of the Guaranteed Job! Students who can’t find work in their fields within six months of graduation can come back to take classes free, or have the college pay their student loans for a year.

The University of Louisiana, Lafayette, is eliminating its philosophy major, while Michigan State University is doing away with American studies and classics, after years of declining enrollments in those majors. [Full story »]

Nearly 24 hours after The Journal-Reporter first broke this story, the Georgia Department of Corrections confirmed that Leeland Mark Braley hung himself in his cell on death row. He was found dead at 5:12 a.m. New Years Day.

The Journal-Reporter learned via anonymous sources at the Georgia Diagnostic Prison in Butts County that convicted killer Leeland Mark Braley committed suicide by hanging himself on death row overnight Dec. 31 - Jan. 1. [Full story »]

Unemployment falls slightly in November
