County manager Stephen Marro interviewed for a city manager position in Debary, Fla. on Wednesday Jan. 27 and mentioned Pike County in a negative light several times. Marro was one of 86 candidates who applied for the position and one of two interviewed. He was not chosen for the job.

Pike County Emergency Services held a county-wide training session Saturday, Jan. 16, burning a house in Concord to train workers on various firefighting tactics. About 40 emergency workers took part in the controlled burn on the 3500 block of Pedenville Road. [Full story »]

Pike County attorney David Fowler was appointed as Thomaston city judge Tuesday, Jan. 19. Fowler spent years as a prosecutor in the Griffin Judicial Circuit and is retiring as a senior lawyer with the prosecuting attorney's council of Georgia. His salary will be $1,200 each month. Thomaston Mayor Hays Arnold swore Fowler in at a ceremony Friday, Jan. 22. [Full story »]

According to the Orlando Sentinel, council members in DeBary, Florida have selected former Ardmore, Oklahoma manager Dan Parrott to run the city. Pike county manager Steve Marro was the other finalist.

A third finalist withdrew his name from consideration. Parrott reportedly handled 288 employees and a $57 million budget in Oklahoma. He starts Feb. 8.

There were 85 people who applied for the job.

Microfinancing is the provision of financial services to low-income clients, including consumers and the self-employed, who traditionally lack access to banking and related services.

It is, in essence, the supply of loans, savings, and other basic financial services to the underpriveleged.

More broadly, it is a movement whose object is a world in which as many poor and near-poor households as possible have permanent access to an appropriate range of high quality financial services, including not just credit but also savings, insurance, and fund transfers. Those who promote microfinance generally believe that such access will help poor people out of poverty. [Full story »]

A man was arrested near downtown Zebulon Friday afternoon after an extensive chase. The chase, which drew a huge law enforcement response, resulted in one arrest. The arrested man was not armed robbery suspect Kevin Chapman, 22, who was captured Jan. 27 in Clayton County. [Full story »]
