Revolutionary soldier to be honored Jan. 30 in Pike

Freed slave and American Revolutionary soldier Austin Dabney fought and won many battles during his life and was injured by a musket shot at the Battle of Kettle Creek in 1779. Much later, he made Pike County his home. His historic grave site will be visited for a public dedication Jan. 30 at 11 a.m. off of Pope Street in Zebulon.

After years of drought, 2009 has ushered in what could be a record-breaking year for rainfall, according to National Weather Service statistics. For the Atlanta area, which includes Pike, the NWS notes 60.33 inches of rain so far this year, breaking 13-year records going back to 1996 and clocking in at 132% above normal for the year. Metro Atlanta saw major flooding in September. [Full story »]

Governor Sonny Perdue announced Monday that Thomaston in Upson County will be home to a new biorefinery demonstration plant, the result of a partnership between Diamond Alternative Energy, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Valero Energy Corporation, and American Process, Inc. (API). The opening of the new facility, expected around the first quarter of 2010, represents the creation of 25-30 jobs in Thomaston and Atlanta. [Full story »]
