No one is exempt. Not the news crowd. Not the garden clubs. Not the caucuses. Not even the late-night TV set. No one is exempt to Barack Obama - or at least his seemingly omnipotent persona.

Each morning millions of Americans awaken to the sound of talk radio and television pundits who may find themselves asking, "When is he going to realize he is the President of the United States?"

Sooner or later it is going to occur to Barack Obama that he is the president of the United States. [Full story »]

Leadership Pike requests funds for defibrillators, lamp posts

The Leadership Pike Class of 2009 is asking the community for help in raising donations for two projects which benefit local agencies.

Donations are being sought for the Pike County recreation department to purchase AED machines. These portable defibrillator machines are used to jump-start a heart in an emergency and can save lives.

World leaders, many reeling from a year marked by global economic freefall and a growing threat from global warming and nuclear proliferation, exhorted one another Wednesday to work together to meet those challenges.

But it was Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, both with his entrance and his 96-minute address, who stole the show completely.

Gadhafi called for world unity in confronting crises -- such as climate change and food shortages -- but he expressed ire at the world body and the United States. [Full story »]

Pike County commission chairman Doug Mangham testified under oath Wednesday at a bond hearing for his daughter, accused killer Teresa Burousas, stating he would not be surprised to learn his daughter lied to investigators, did not blame her for doing so and would have lied to them himself.

Mangham's comments stunned many veteran courtroom observers. [Full story »]

Meansville under fire over district

Pike County officials wooed the cities into joining the new county fire district but only Meansville resisted that courtship. Now the city’s decision is being questioned by a local resident.

Margie Trammell quizzed city council Monday, Sept. 14, about Meansville’s decision two months ago to resist consolidating the volunteer fire department into the newly created county fire district.

Meansville is the only Pike city that refused to join.

Victim in fatal Concord crash identified

A one-vehicle wreck in Concord resulted in a fatality around 3:45 p.m. Tuesday. A Pontiac Sunbird flipped on its roof in the grass next to a gazebo at the waking path in downtown Concord.
