Police continue to search for suspects thought to be responsible for 20 to 24 burglaries in Pike, Lamar, Spalding, Butts and Monroe counties.

On Wednesday, September 23, at approximately 11:06 a.m., sheriff's deputies and investigators from the Monroe County Sheriff's office responded to a 911 call from a homeowner in northern Monroe County whose home was being burglarized by two unidentified male suspects. [Full story »]

Leadership Pike requests funds for defibrillators, lamp posts

The Leadership Pike Class of 2009 is asking the community for help in raising donations for two projects which benefit local agencies.

Donations are being sought for the Pike County recreation department to purchase AED machines. These portable defibrillator machines are used to jump-start a heart in an emergency and can save lives.

Meansville under fire over district

Pike County officials wooed the cities into joining the new county fire district but only Meansville resisted that courtship. Now the city’s decision is being questioned by a local resident.

Margie Trammell quizzed city council Monday, Sept. 14, about Meansville’s decision two months ago to resist consolidating the volunteer fire department into the newly created county fire district.

Meansville is the only Pike city that refused to join.

Officials watch for flooding on Flint

Due to heavy rains in the upper Flint River watershed area, Pike officials are monitoring water levels along the Flint River in Pike County in the event of flooding.

Fire chief Danny Henderson says there are no reports of flooding in Pike yet, but that could change if rain continues and the river continues to rise. [Full story »]

A former Pike County official pleaded guilty Friday to stealing money from the department that he once led.

Shawn Shoats, the former director of the Pike County Recreation Authority, pleaded guilty to one count of theft by conversion. [Full story »]

Presented in conjunction with SlowExposures 2009, the nationally recognized photo exhibition held annually in Pike County, the new The phoDOGraphy Show showcases a collection of photographs taken by dogs.

“Yes, dogs,” says curator, Jan Fields. “Six canine phoDOGraphers were asked to take phoDOGraphs where they like to play in and around their home.”

Equipped with cameras with an automatic timer that goes off every two seconds, this whimsical collection of 30 photographs looks at rural Georgia from a dog’s point of view. [Full story »]

Beloved pets overcome by smoke during fires now stand a better chance of survival in Pike County.

Friends of Pike County Animals donated four sets of pet oxygen masks to the county on Wednesday, Sept. 9.

“This will certainly save pet lives,” fire chief Danny Henderson said of the gift. [Full story »]

Molena gets its $500K CDBG grant

Molena received $500,000 in federal grant funds for water improvements. The grant is among nearly $37 million in federal funding Georgia received.

Georgia was awarded millions in federal grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for the Community Development Block Grant and Community HOME Investment programs. [Full story »] 

Thomaston Man Dies at AMS

According to the Henry County P.D.,the manager of the Big Chic Restaurant in Forsyth apparently died of carbon monoxide poisoning in the parking lot of Atlanta Motor Speedway Saturday night.

Jeff Wall of Thomaston, in his 30's, reportedly went to sleep in his car between two campers running generators and the fumes penetrated his vehicle. [Full story »]
