The board of education established the millage rate at a brief meeting Thursday, Aug. 27.

"The millage rate is less than last year," financial director Kenneth Carter said. "And the dollars generated by these rates are the very same as last year."

The net total millage rate established by the board is 14.379 for 2009, which is for the fiscal year 2010 budget. That is 13.252 mills for maintenance and operations, and 1.127 mills for bond. [Full story »] 

It was swine flu after all.

State health officials confirmed last week a 13-year-old Pike County girl tested positive for swine flu. The teen is completely recovered and back at school, Hayla Hall, risk communicator for District 4 Public Health, announced Aug. 19.

The official notification that Pike schools had a confirmed case of swine flu caught citizens by surprise, coming just days after superintendent Dr. Michael Duncan said the child was not afflicted with swine flu.

“The parents relayed information to us that the health care provider had just told them she didn’t have it,” Duncan said. “We thought that was very credible information.”

Apparently there are two students in Pike County school(s) who are being tested for swine flu. Neither the ages of the students nor the school(s) they attend was disclosed but indications are they are from the same family. Test results are expected within the next 48 hours.
