With the 2010 Census coming up, the U.S. Census Bureau has released its annual estimates of population as of July 2008. The figures indicate Pike County saw a huge growth over the past eight years after the 2000 Census was adjusted.
In 2000, Pike's population was set at 13,688. As of last summer it was believed to be 17,569.
The Census Bureau said Pike had grown to 14,036 people in 2001; jumped to 14,610 in 2002; rose 15,019 in 2003; increased to 15,573 in 2004 and 15,970 in 2005 then 16,543 in 2006. Another big jump came in 2007 when the population was set at 17,155.
By comparison, Meriwether County, went from 22,534 to 22,840; Lamar County jumped from 15,912 to 17,000; and Spalding went from 58,417 to 63,913. Losing population among adjoining counties was Upson, which fell from 27,597 to 27,530.
Also in the McIntosh Trail region, Butts County grew from 19,522 in 2000 to 24,423 people last year.
