Fire chief's salary eliminated

County commissioners voted unanimously to eliminate the $18,000 annual salary for the county's fire chief position at the Jan. 12 meeting. The county will now advertise for 30 days for a new fire chief to replace former chief Danny Henderson who was terminated just before Christmas.

The commissioners could do us a great favor by forgoing their salaries, expenses, and benefits as an example to the citizens. The fire chief does more work than any of them.

Excellent idea! (I've thought of it myself) In an effort to reign in unnecessary spending the Commission should do donate their salaries and expenses back to the county to show what "Volunteerism" is all about. They have determined that as many public servants as possible should work for free so they should literally "PUT THEIR MONEY WHERE THEIR MOUTH IS." As for benefits, that one isn't likely to happen as long as Tommy "Transport" Powers is in need of medical care and doesn't want to have to make up the difference after Medicare pays.

How about it Commissioners? Are you SERVANTS of the community like the volunteer firefighters and first responders, or are you ROYALTY? Let's hear an explanation from each commissioner as to why they "deserve" compensation more than anyone else. LEAD FROM THE FRONT!

I agree why don't the commissioners eliminate their salaries along with the other officials in the county. and see how for that goes. I'm sure that will not even be a consideration.

I wonder if ole Danny Chief would have stayed on as chief if they had taken his pay? That is if they hadn't fired him first, guess we'll never know. Anyone know how he's doin?

Typical backwards good ol' boy politics. As a fire protection professional with both a Bachelors and a Master degree there is no way I would want anything to do with these clowns. The old saying of "you get what you pay for" applys. You want somone to do it for free, you'll get that level of competancy and professionalism.

Did you not learn the term "Delegate Authority". I will break it down like a fraction for you college boy (that is volunteer jargon). Assign several simple task to each officer and the work load is eased off the chief. Hence the term “volunteer” you know there are hundreds of departments in the states that have more stations, personnel, vehicles, taskforces (Hazmat, Heavy Rescue, EMS, etc) and their complete management staff is totally volunteer. I am truly amazed by the simpletons such as; the ex-chief, his supporters, the polecat-5 etc. that want to pay for a volunteer position. Pike County in a simple little po-dunk rural department and that ex-retard chief got everyone stirred up about how metro we are down here. It is obvious those believers can’t distinguish reality from fiction.
It doesn’t take a college education to figure that one out but, if you want me to continue to tutor you, you will have to pay me.

I have over 25 years in the fire service so do the math on my age……….psssss I’m (44). I need to get a clue and life……hummmm just follow my bloggings and you may learn something. “I mean seriously?” that sure sounds like a phrase the ex fired chief would use, are you still sore about his departure?

Attacking a persons ability to spell is one of the lowest forms of retaliation against a blogger. This mans spelling has nothing to do with the message or opinion he is stating. It bothers me because it prevents other people who have trouble spelling from sharing their views on this site. All these attacks on Firebug show nothing but the jealousy people have for him and his education. I know if I changed your mind about criticizing peoples spelling you will now move on to other grown up stuff like talking about their wife, mother, children or all of the above. I will wait for that to happen before I state my opinion on how that is just plain wrong.

i would agree with you (strange i know) with one exception. in the case where someone is so obviously trying to show his superiority (masters degree in fireology) he better make darn sure he spelled things correctly and used good grammar.

if your going to tell me how educated you are and how you are far superior than the good ol' boys around town, you better be able to spell.

but other than that, right.

Stupid! Who is next the Sheriff? Did volunteers build all those new fire stations around Pike? Or do we now rate builders higher than a Fire Chief? Will someone actually be a fire chief for free? And why? I think Pike would have had a better chance of getting those Fire Stations built for free. Does sound like a job for Fat Bass Tard though. He has a strong belief in not wasting tax payers money and likes people who donate time and money to save it.

we had an extremely good volunteer fire chief before hendersnot. one of our commissioners worked for him before becoming a commissioner and made it his mission to get rid of him. i'm guessing our fire chief asked him to help out with something he didn't want to do.

now that same EX-commissioner wants to keep paying a fire chief. maybe because he wants the job himself.

there must be some pretty good kick backs from vendors and such for someone to do it for free. would make sense though. its like these mayors paying more for their campaign than what the full term salary comes to. doesnt take a genius to figure that out.

New Lamar County fire station. Big fire house. We have a full time paid Lamar County firefighters with the fire house 24 hour and 7 days. Coming this summer, Get a job. Who want? Who want to be a firefighter?, Not volunteer. Must be age 21-35 years old. Must have a high school diploma or GED. Must possess a valid Driver’s License Class A or B. Must not have a Felony Record this will be checked. Must have a good driving record less than 10 pts. Should be in good physical condition. Must have a Certified firefighter 1 and or 2.

No thank you. As a long time resident of Pike I believe people should work for free. It really make sense if you do not think about it. Plus if I get money I will lose my food stamps, rental assistance, and medicare. I am with the citizens of Pike. Free is better for everyone.
