The Pike County Board of Education has tentatively adopted a Bond millage rate which will increase property taxes by 114.27%.
All concerned citizens are invited to attend public hearings on this tax increase to be held at the Board of Education administrative offices, 16 Jackson Street, Zebulon, Georgia, on August 12, 2010 at 6:00 p.m.

Why are they raising the taxes instead of cutting the administrators paychecks?
They are having furlough days, correct?
By law, aren't they suppose to have a list written out on WHY they want this increase and WHAT it will be used for??
We don't have any kids in the school system and never have had any kids, and still have to pay. How fair is that? How about they re-evaluate for number of kids in a household.
why do i have to pay for them?
we all have to pay our fair share.
THE REAL PROBLEM HERE IS THAT THE BOC AND BOE ARE COMPLETLY NUTS1!@!@#$@!!!!@##$#
Get rid of Mike Duncan and everybody's taxes will go down, no doubt!
i am calling for everyone to refuse to pay property taxes until both the BOC and BOE members resign.
Walt, please do a better job in informing the taxpaying citizens in Pike county. And you should be held responsible for the outcome of the "hornets nest" you have stirred up. Of the surrounding school districts Pike county has earned the School of Excellence distinction. And as a citizen of Pike I would most definitely select Pike over Spalding or Lamar. The educators of the Pike County school system should be commended for their hard work and tireless effort in improving the education offered to our children in Pike County.
Granted. . .the Board could have gotten ahead of this PR fiasco. . .but they didn't.
millage rate is a rate you pay per thousand of the value of a house. I do not know what Pike's is but lets say it is 4.5 right now.
Last year your house was worth 200k, you would pay 200x4.5=$900.00
This year, because of declining markets, your house is worth 150k. If the millage rate did not change you would pay 150x4.5=$675.00
If you adjusted the millage rate by 100 percent, the millage rate would be 9 so you would pay 150x9=$1350 so it would be an effective dollar amount increase of 50 percent.
Now, one thing to watch is the appraisal of your property. Most of the times, governments are slow to lower the value of your property that you pay on, but quick to raise the millage rate. Be ready to dispute the appraisal of your house.
This is my understanding of how it works.
The Pike County Board of Education today announces its intention to increase the property taxes it will levy this year for Maintenance and Operations by 2.25 percent over the rollback millage rate. Additionally, the Board also announces its intention to increase the property taxes it will levy this year for School Bond repayment by 114.27 percent over the rollback millage rate. Therefore, before the Board of Education may set a final millage rate, Georgia Law requires that three public hearings be held to allow the public an opportunity to express their opinions on this increase.
For the past three fiscal years, the Board of Education has levied a School Bond repayment millage which was significantly lower than that required to repay annual Bond debt. The result was tax savings to the local property taxpayer for three consecutive years. The tentatively adopted millage rate for fiscal year 2011 accurately reflects the total amount, coupled with SPLOST sales tax revenues, needed to fully fund School Bond debt payments. Those bonds being repaid were sold for the construction of our current High and Middle School facilities.
The tentative Maintenance and Operations millage rate will collect no new property tax dollars but calls for slight millage rate increase due to a 2.29% drop in the total value of our local property tax digest. To provide historical perspective, the Maintenance and Operations millage proposed for the current fiscal year is just slightly higher than that levied in fiscal 2005. Couple this with the fact that State funding for school operations has decreased due to “austerity reductions” in a drastic way during that five year period. In this light, the relatively steady millage rate for maintenance and operations during this time of economic downturn and State funding loss reflects the Board to Education’s philosophy to operate our schools in a prudent and fiscally conservative manner - all the while seeking the highest level of student achievement.
The Dark Side went off.
