The first week of May was National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week. The 9-year-old son of a Molena native was featured May 4 on the Discovery Health Channel along with his family. The show was part of a Psych Week documentary called “Born Schizophrenic.”

There are an estimated 2.4 millions adults living with schizophrenia but children with the illness are often overlooked.

I would love to get in touch with this family! My daughter was diagnosed with bipolar and severe ADHD. It would be nice to know of others around here that have children with similar illnesses.

I am the one that wrote the first comment. I just created a new account on yahoo so other parents in the area can get in touch with me if they want and maybe share our stories with each other or share advice or set up a play date for our children over the summer. I am looking at creating a local website for parents of children with ADHD, bipolar, and other illnesses as my husband and I have done some web design in the past. As I said before, it would be great to know that there are other parents out there (local) that go through the things that my family has to. Thanks and I hope to hear from some of you from here about our precious children! And I forgot to say thanks to you that told me about the organizations!

Hi, are you aware of CABF and GCBF? We are parents of bipolar children. Both organizations have listservs that can provide invaluable information as well as networking: http://www.bpkids.org/ and http://www.gcbf.org/.

BBC News online just published an article about how schizophrenia has very similar brain patterns to those with high creativity. It also said that those who are highly creative often have a family history of mental illness. I believe this proves that ADHD, Schizofrenia, and other mental disorders are just different continuum s on a broad spectrum of intelligence. We should all support these parents who deal with so many challenges, if only just by our understanding of the specialness of their children.

Interesting. I've always thought that ADHD kids are just bored. I think there intelligence levels are so high that they can't deal with the boredom of waiting on their classmates.

Not a slam on their classmates (i know some anonymouse will take that personally).
