Pride of Pike cancelled?

Funding of the Pride of Pike parade and fireworks display was a hot issue at the April 14 commission meeting. Last year the county funded the $12,000 fireworks display. The recreation authority requested $9,000 from the county this year after putting $3,000 of parks and recreation money toward the annual event. Commissioners did not decide the issue but it will be brought up again at the April 27 meeting.

The Commissioners made this mess. The commissioners need to step up and fund it.

A little help from the Chamber/Business community wouldn't hurt either.

During hard times when People can't afford a real vacation, events like these are more important than ever................

No wonder it wasn't done. They make a motion for it and can't get a second. They make a motion againt it and can't get a second. It is obvious that the commissioners have no guts. Therefore no glory.

What mess-I mean, did the commissioners somehow destroy the 4th of July for the free world, too, in addition to stealing, squandering and backing a carpetbagger? Why would we spend my tax money on your entertainment? I love fireworks as much as anybody, but I don't expect the government to take other peoples money to fund it. I would have voted in favor of having the event and against funding it with tax payer money. Just pay the fee and go to the Rock Ranch if the community don't want to step up; don't expect the taxpayers to fund it. We just had our TEA Party, let's find a way to reduce taxes, one firecracker at a time...

If that is a vacation or the highlight of the 4th then maybe people need to get a second job.

The government is not in the entertainment business.......

Maybe you can talk to Danny Chief and get him to donate some funds from his and BOC illegal fire fee? Why screw us more by getting the BOC to chip in?

It's sad that this event was cancelled. I haven't attended the last few years because it was just too crowded for me. But I know there were many vendors selling their wares. Maybe they should have been paying a fee to help offset the costs.

In hard times things have to be cut, that is the way of the world. If you lose your job, you don't go out to eat every meal. It's just the way it is.

David, It has not yet been canceled. Senstional Journalism puts the ? mark at the end of the eye grobbing headline. It may be canceled on May 1st if People don't step up by April 30th........

whatever, its great, but did yo see the "firefighters" last year bout killed a kid trying to get to a call. Not worth it to me.

well people ya all can go to another town and have a great time. spend your money there and help them out and enjoy yourselves. putting your money in a another county. Happy 4th That what FUND RAISERS ARE FOR.

The county, state and federal government shound NOT fund these types of venues. The government was designed for public safety, infrastructure, etc. Not parades, fireworks, sporting complexes.

People look for the government to do so much and it comes at a price. Thank you BOC, and I don't say that to much.

Is Pride of Pike equivalent to the July 4, Independence Day celebration? Just curious. I remember when society took the Christ out of Christmas and replaced it with an X. And now the little stores cannot even say Merry Christmas for fear of disrespecting some jerk or another. Happy Independence Day to you. Enjoy it while you have it, America. It is the 4th of July, and we'd attended every one at the Rec Complex. I thought that the bank sponsored it; I had no idea it was taxpayers. Guess I had my head in the sand on that one. It was a fun community event.

I agree don't do the fireworks. Go buy your own. I live in PC all my life and really don't care for the thing. Bet the transplants love it thou. I know we don't have the best commisoners but i agree with them if they don't budget the thing.But we could use the money on stuff that it really needs to be used and would benefit from it and not the court house either we can only keep dumping so much into that thing. Lets use it on the roads, heck why not the school system or something for christ sakes. Why waste money for something that goes up in the air and goes boom?

If we don't have money to fund our local school system(Is education even a priority in this county????), a paid fire department, and a living wage for our law enforcemnet, then WHY should our tax dollars be used for a WANT such as a fireworks display? When planning a budget, remember NEEDS should be addressed first.

If you truly want to go see something special. On July 3rd at Fort Benning which is appx 1 hour away they have a incredible fourth of July all day celebration and fireworks etc. If you want to see something truly patriotic and special then go see this.

The Recreation Authority had not right to contribute tax funds to fireworks and neither do the commissioners. I like the fireworks as well as anyone does, however if citizens want the fireworks in this economy they should DONATE ALL of the money themselves. No taxpayer should be taxed for funds for fireworks.

A huge amount of the budget has gone to upgrading Pike Co 911 system. So, you have to understand they made a wise choice for the county as a whole.

911 system? When I call 911, it works just fine. Only problem is the jokesters that run that place. When I moved to Pike county, I had to deal with the 911 director. She was never in and I could never get any help. I hear that she and the asst director just got back from a cruise together and now she is in Florida doing "training", then she will be leaving for a 10 day vacation. What a joke
