What about reckless conduct or something. Leaving a loaded weapon without a gun lock or in a locked cabinet by a police officer should be chargeable as some violation, failure to secure weapon if it was his police issued weapon? I don't know, but most importantly, thank God the child is alive and doing okay.
What? Are you serious? Keeping a gun in a lock box only makes it more difficult to retrieve it in an emergency, like when someones breaking in your house and attacks you and your family. It should be ready and in plain sight, but the kids should know NOT to ever touch it without a parent showing them how to safely. (Yes, kids should be taught proper firearms handling)
Guns have been out in plain sight in peoples homes for hundreds of years. Eliminating them or locking them away is NOT the solution, it's just some generic feel-good statement.
A FOUR year old the proper handling of firearms?? Seriously? I may leave cookies on the counter before dinner and chance that they make the right choice to not touch, but not a loaded gun.
I was ticked off too until I read how much climbing the kid had to do in order to retrieve the gun. I think the Mickey Mouse hat needs to be placed in a more accessible location. I thank God the children are fine.

Uhh, when this happens in other families, one or both parents get charged for violating SOME state law. Hmm, wonder why this parent didn't??
Criminal charges would not do anything to help the situation, only make it worse.
