Friday's heavy snowfall was a surprise to most, but none more than the 14 Ugandans staying in Pike County. Seven boys and six girls make up Ugandan Thunder, a choir that sings across the southeast to raise money for the Pennies for Posho feeding program.
Pike countian Ted Moody started the Pennies for Posho ministry which helps seven orphanages and more than 4,000 children in Uganda. They were staying with him Friday. His assistant Melinda Fowler said they were amazed by the snowfall.
"They loved it. They said it was really cold but they threw snowballs and went sledding and they have pictures to prove it," said Fowler. "Uganda is on the equator, so it's never going to snow there."
Ugandan Thunder performed in Barnesville at Calvary Baptist Church Feb. 15 and will travel to sing in Alabama for the next couple of weeks. To find out more about the ministry and choir, go to penniesforposho.org. Send donations to Pennies for Posho, 1289 McKinley Rd., Zebulon Ga., 30295.
"The needs are tremendous. In Uganda, there are 2.5 million orphans in the streets and the bush who have nowhere to live," said Fowler. "They lost a whole generation because of the AIDS epidemic. There are 15 million orphans total."
