Pike County's unemployment rate fell again in December to 10.7%, allowing it to regain its long held position as best employed county in the 10-county Three Rivers region. Pike's unemployment was down from 11% in November.

Pike residents are employed outside the county, for the most part. There's not much industry inside the county, so not many employers.
Also, these numbers are based on the number of new filings for unemployment. It's not taking into consideration the people who have run out of filings and couldn't renew.
Hey I just ran out of unemployment and I'm still unemployed. I guess the good news is I don't count as unemployed any longer so things must be getting better. I say now is the perfect time to pass a splost and build a new judicial complex.
Unemployment does not take into account the people who no longer get bonuses that once figured into their income or those who have not had a raise in years - though prices continue to rise. Like the other posts state, there are also those who no longer qualify for unemployment. They simply have no income.
The private sector is usually not nearly as generous as the government sector with regard to salaries it pays employees and elected officials. When the government wants to increase wages, it turns to the taxpayers for money. Property owners pay or face losing their property. Wage earners may see less take home pay - whether it be income tax or sales tax.
Taxpayers do have a choice, however, with regard to who they elect for office. We need fiscally responsible, fiscally frugal people to step up to the plate and run for office.
This is true for a local or national office, and I hope Concord Resident sees the post:
The final statement is exactly the 'try something different' I was referring to. Someone needs to get off the bench and throw their name in the running. It's so easy to stay back behind the fence and yell; it takes a whole different kind of person to get in the game.
And, if and when you or others get in there and give it all you have, I will not criticize you or post nasty things about your decisions. It is so easy to tear down anything; and ever so difficult to build it up. Let us work on the 'building something up'.
No, the test scores will not go down. It doesn't take 20 teachers to cheat these tests, giving the answers, marking the answers to show they are correct, etc.
I dont' know for fact if Pike Co. is doing this, but I wouldn't doubt it a bit.
This is happening all over and has been PROVEN. It is on front page of AJC *every* Sunday.
If people knew how corrupt and horrible NCLB is, they would be either fighting to get rid of it, or snatching their children out of public schools.
People think this helps the kids learn better, they don't know that it in fact does the opposite. Ask any teacher....
What are you talking about? I can say for sure that every teacher at my school is an excellent educator doing everything possible to be sure that your little darling is making the grade. If not, you might want to check around your own backdoor. Teachers can only do so much.
Pike County is a very cool school. My child loves going!Teachers are not cheating. Get real! Maybe a few but the majority value thier job. I can say nothing bad about the school except the way they handle funds.
Get it right people. If you don't stand up for fire chief Danny Henderson he will be unemployed. Right now all he has is $18G and a couple of lawn mowers in a off season. Stand up for Danny and keep him employed.

I enjoy the many opinions here, and I don't post nasty things about anyone, even when nasty things are splattered all over the pages.
I have pointed out some things, shared what I felt was good information, and posted some opinions. I respect anyone's right to do the same.
