Pike County's unemployment rate fell again in December to 10.7%, allowing it to regain its long held position as best employed county in the 10-county Three Rivers region. Pike's unemployment was down from 11% in November.
At the same time initial jobless claims by citizens rose, the number of people counted in the workforce went down and the county lost 35 jobs. In December the work force numbered 7,921 people with 7,071 working and 850 looking for jobs. In all, 37 people were dropped from the work force.
In the Three Rivers Region, the highest joblessness was found in Meriwether County at 14.4%. In second place was Spalding with 13.7% of people out of work. Heard County, in third place, jumped to 13.2. Fourth was Lamar and Upson, both at 12.8%. The top five counties were followed by Troup, 12.7%; Butts, 12.5%; Carroll, 10.9%; and Coweta, 10.8%.
The national adjusted unemployment rate is 10%. For 25 of the last 26 months, Georgia’s unemployment rate has exceeded the national unemployment rate. Since the recession began in December 2007 Georgia’s workforce has shrunk by 121,257, or 2.5%, from 4,823,467 to 4,702,210.

Also, these numbers are based on the number of new filings for unemployment. It's not taking into consideration the people who have run out of filings and couldn't renew.
The private sector is usually not nearly as generous as the government sector with regard to salaries it pays employees and elected officials. When the government wants to increase wages, it turns to the taxpayers for money. Property owners pay or face losing their property. Wage earners may see less take home pay - whether it be income tax or sales tax.
Taxpayers do have a choice, however, with regard to who they elect for office. We need fiscally responsible, fiscally frugal people to step up to the plate and run for office.
The final statement is exactly the 'try something different' I was referring to. Someone needs to get off the bench and throw their name in the running. It's so easy to stay back behind the fence and yell; it takes a whole different kind of person to get in the game.
And, if and when you or others get in there and give it all you have, I will not criticize you or post nasty things about your decisions. It is so easy to tear down anything; and ever so difficult to build it up. Let us work on the 'building something up'.
I enjoy the many opinions here, and I don't post nasty things about anyone, even when nasty things are splattered all over the pages.
I have pointed out some things, shared what I felt was good information, and posted some opinions. I respect anyone's right to do the same.
I dont' know for fact if Pike Co. is doing this, but I wouldn't doubt it a bit.
This is happening all over and has been PROVEN. It is on front page of AJC *every* Sunday.
If people knew how corrupt and horrible NCLB is, they would be either fighting to get rid of it, or snatching their children out of public schools.
People think this helps the kids learn better, they don't know that it in fact does the opposite. Ask any teacher....
